Questions on 'Watching' Documentary

1) What does Thomas Sutcliffe mean when he says "films need to seduce their audience into long term commitment. While there are many types of seduction, the temptation to go for instant arousal is almost irresistable"?

 A)  It is very important for films to grab it's audience attention from the early start of the film this will then "seduce their audience into long term commitment", meaning they will want to continue watching the film till the end.

2) According to director Jean Jacques Beineix, what are the risks of 'instant arousal'?

A)  Beineix believes instant arousal is not very successful with the audience. Instant arousal provides its audience with a dramatic opening, Beineix argues if you start strong will you be able to provide your audience with a good plot throughout the movie. The best way to start is to 'slowly nurture your desires'

3) Explain why "a good beginning must make the audience feel that it doesn't know nearly enough yet, and at the same time make sure that it doesn't know too little."

A) A film must begin with an engaging opening in order to attract the audience. A good film keeps its audience on the edge of their seat waiting for the film to unveil.  It is crucial to get the right amount of information across in the first few minutes, just like the quote above illustrates. A good film opening does't give out a lot of information to keep its audience engaged with the plot desperately trying to find out more.

4 ) What does critic Stanley Kauffmann describe as the classic opening? Why does this work?

A) Stanley describes a classic opening beginning with an 'establishing shot' for example of a city the film is set in. The camera should then move on to introducing the character. Through this the audience are already familiar with the setting, the character and the genre. Hence why Stanley describes it as a " simple, classic process".

5) Why is Kyle Cooper's title sequence so effective?

a) The opening credits to 'Se7en' perfectly captures the genre of the film by the use of colour and sound. The scary images and close-up's of books engage the audience into finding out what significance this has to the plot and also foreshadows the story of the film.

Storyboarding - Collateral

Group Task

In the lesson we done a story board to prepare us for our next lesson when we are going to re construct the scenes in collateral.

We thought about various areas of the film to help us best construct our work, for example we took things such as mise en scene, editing, and camera work into consideration as i carry out my work.

Also the location we are looking to use is Chappel Market because its a busy place where is close to what we are looking for.

300: The conventions of a film opening

The film '300' follows the conventions of film openings in most movies. The genre of the movie is
established through the title sequence and the images.

The red splatter helps to establish the genre of the movie by indicating the film
contains violence and the credits resemble the blood.

The narrative of the film is also established through the moving images.

The opening of the film suggests the plot of the film revolves around a battle as
the opening sequence only focuses on blood and silhouettes of men fighting.

Conventions in the opening sequence of Casino Royale

 Title sequences/credits and sound

The Title sequence shows the veiwers the name of the movie; Casino Royale. In the title there are shapes of card suits (hearts, diamonds, clubs and spades) around the main title conveying that there will be cards involved.

During the opening sequence while the opening credits are shown there are scenes where spade shapes are flying and killing people instead of bullets. This conveys that because of cards and gambling people are going to die.

The soundtrack (you know my name by chris cornell) is hard rock conventionally used to show that the film is going to have action inside it.

H/w Task: Conventions In The Opening Of Takers

The film i have chosen to analyse is 'Takers'. I am going to analyse how it follows the conventions of film openings.

The opening sequence of this film starts with the logo of Sony. Logos are also one of the most common similarities in all film openings.

Logo which is first shown in the opening of 'Takers'.

Throughout the opening sequence of the film, sounds such as guns being fired and triggers being loaded are used to give us as the audience a insight of what the film might be about, for example if it will be about criminality or death. Also the fast pace of the editing also lets us know its going to be in the genre of action.

Conventions of film openings

We looked at film conventions in opening of different films. In the first clip we looked at, the beginning scene the credits will slash and run into each other and there was dramatic voilin music making it sound devilish.

Then the clip changed to a male and female kissing on the bed half naked. The convention changes from dramatic horror to romance.

conventions of film openings

we looked at film conventions in opening of different films. I saw convention of thriller, which was brought up by suspicious music, and credits that run into each other. This tells us that there will be use of vilence during the movie, and the music is used to get the audience ready for that.

Then I saw convention of romance, with man and a woman half naked kissing on the bed. This was an instant change of mood in the opening, which was unexpected.

The last convention that I seen in the movie called "goodfellas" which brings up the criminal convention, as it is a gangster movie, so you get feelings of crime while watching the movie. The factors that get the audience to feel that way about the opening, because there was specific props used in the opening, like blood and knifes, and they are props that would be used in a crime. Also in the credits, the title of the movie was coloured red, which is colour of blood.

Conventions of film openings

Credits

Most films begin with the opening title sequence.
The opening title sequence of Psycho illustrates
the genre of the film with the use of dark colours
and dramatic music with the titles crashing into lines.

The opening title sequence of Trainspotting differs from the one in Psycho.
The title sequence in Trainspotting introduces the characters in a fast-paced
opening of the first scene. Unlike in 'Trainspotting' in 'Psycho' the title sequence
begins before any action takes place in the film.

Production Logo

All films tend to begin with a production logo.
This is an example from one of the Harry Potter films.

This is a different example from Charlie's Angels.
The Genre is established

In the opening of The Notebook Genre is established through the romantic
scenery which suggests the genre of the movie is a Romance/Drama

The genre is also established at the beginning of Ghost Ship.
The dark colours and the skull suggest that the genre of the film is a horror.

Introduction to Characters
In undisputed the first character is introduced within the first minute of the film.

Conventions of film openings

Psycho: The opening sequence is of credits which break up and look slashed. This sets the mood for the thriller. Also the opening is not very typical of a thriller which was a romantic scene of two people having a affair in the hotel room, and the view over Arazona is very sinister.
